Isn’t that right?! The Beatles knew it. I know you know it too. But putting it into practice is hard.
Loving ourselves is the most important thing we can do. It’s not selfish – it’s anti-selfish. By loving ourselves we can accept who we are and find greater levels of happiness and contentment. By loving ourselves we can accept others and give them our love and compassion. By loving ourselves we can break away from our fears and things that hold us back and move forward with openness and positive energy.
Only then can we truly love others. If we don’t love ourselves first, we don’t take care of ourselves so what good are we to others (you might think you’re holding it together now but eventually you won’t be any good to anyone if you don’t love yourself and care for yourself first). When we truly love ourselves and we truly love others then we don’t need to be needed anymore; we don’t need validation. Life becomes better, happier and we have more control because who controls how we feel? We do.
Here’s the hardest part. Loving those people we don’t get along with or find difficult. I struggle daily with it. But if you think of them with love and compassion they suddenly don’t seem so bad. Again, it’s hard. But think how little they love themselves; think about what crap they have going on that they don’t know how to deal with; think about the fact that perhaps they don’t feel loved. That’s why they behave that way. At the very least, love them for the lesson they teach you in the type of person you don’t want to be. Then again, maybe some people are just assholes…
