Everyone has an asshole in their lives. If you’re like me you may have a few…

I just finished reading the book “The Asshole Survival Guide” and I have to admit, it gave some great tips for dealing with the various assholes in our lives. The most resounding tip was to treat them with kindness. Which is really, really hard!!!

The resounding lesson I took away from my recent trip to India is to treat everyone with kindness. Hmmm…this kindness thing keeps coming up. But it makes sense…even if someone treats you with the utmost disrespect, if you treat them with kindness it just highlights what an asshole they are. But it’s really, really hard.

I meditate each morning. Since I got back from India, the intention that I set each morning is to treat everyone I encounter with kindness. Easier said than done when they are ruining your Zen and in your face. It’s my work in progress. Something I strive to consciously do each day. And it’s really, really hard.

But anything worth doing is hard. I find small victories when I keep my cool and respond with kindness, when something that used to bother me doesn’t, when I notice I have more control over my emotions. If anything else, the assholes in my life teach me about the type of person that I don’t want to be like. And with kindness in my heart I can let that be a lesson…even when it’s really, really hard!!
